December 2017 – Texturing and Enhancing – Terry Morrill

It was a cold winter’s night and the only ones stirring were the Hard Core Woodturners of Indiana County.  A small group gathered to see Terry demonstrate a variety of approached to texturing and enhancing turned objects.

A Handout is available here.

We were asked to make a set of tops to support the efforts of a Medical Mission to South America.  Jack Brown agreed to lead a Top Making Workshop.  He quickly presented two methods he has used to make tops.  Then the group spun up a handful of lathes and made a bundle of tops.

The mission trip so scheduled for late Spring 2018.  Members will continue to make and contribute tops.  The final collection will be at the May meeting.

An interesting multi-axis project.  In short:

  1. Turn a “Ball on a Stick”
  2. Cut it in half and mount the Half-Ball in the Chuck
  3. Hollow the Half-Ball to make the scoop bowl
  4. Whittle, sand and finish with walnut oil and beeswax.

September 2017 – A Visit to an Artists Studio – Chris Weiland

Chris and Suzi Weiland welcomed us to their home including Suzi’s “Hut” (a lovely planting shed) and Chris’s studio.  Chris discussed a wood salvage project he’s developed with Yellow Creek State Park.  The results include a variety of beautiful rustic planters located throughout the property.

Chris was able to ‘borrow” Suzi’s Hut to set up a lathe that he built to enable him to make large turnings.  The lathe is powered by an electric motor through a small (four-speed plus reverse) automobile transmission and a belt link to the headstock.

After seeing the lathe in action, we moved to Chris’s studio where we learned a bit about his design process and were able to see many of his items of work in stages running the gamut from initial concept to final product.  This was a most enjoyable evening!
